From update frequency to how our rates differ from banks and where the data comes from — here are the questions people ask most when they first use ExchangeMate.
Under normal conditions, we pull the latest rates about every minute. As long as the lime dot at the top of the screen is pulsing, you're connected in real time — and each currency card shows the exact time its data was last refreshed.
The value ExchangeMate shows is the mid-market rate (base rate) formed in the market. Banks and exchange counters add or subtract spreads, fees, and preferential margins to set their actual transaction rates, which is why they differ from what we display.
ExchangeMate's calculator works on a per-1-yen (JPY) basis. If you're used to the 100-yen basis banks often quote, just multiply the displayed value by 100 to compare. For example, if 1 yen is 9.1 won, then 100 yen is 910 won.
Please use it as a reference figure only. For actual overseas transfers or currency exchange, the final amount will change once each bank's preferential margin, transfer fees, and intermediary bank costs are added. When dealing with large amounts, we strongly recommend confirming the finalized posted rate at the institution you're transacting with.
We currently offer four currencies against the Korean won (KRW): US dollar, Japanese yen, euro, and Chinese yuan. The pound (GBP), Australian dollar (AUD), and Hong Kong dollar (HKD) are next in line for review — if there's a currency you'd like, let us know through the inquiry form below.
We pull rates through a public exchange rate API that aggregates data from the global foreign exchange market. We use the median of multiple sources to filter out outliers, and if an update fails, we keep displaying the last successful value along with its timestamp.
The foreign exchange market is mostly closed on weekends, so rates barely move on Saturdays and Sundays and stay near Friday's closing price. They begin updating in real time again when the market opens Monday morning.
Currency requests, bug reports, partnership inquiries — leave us anything, and we'll review it and reply by email.
Just enter an amount in won and it instantly converts to dollars, yen, euros, and yuan. Update time included, at a glance.
